Why is Velma MA 15? ›

Velma Season 2 had every shot at taking the fiery feedback from the first season and blossoming into a fun riff on the classic Scooby-Doo heroine. Instead, it seems to have doubled down on everything that made Season 1 so unpalatable.

In the new TV-MA-rated series, Velma Dinkley is Indian. This decision to change the character's background (she's been a white character since 1969) was partially inspired by Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman's animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which features a Black Spider-Man.

The series serves as an alternate universe origin story for Mystery Inc., pitched as a "love quadrangle" between them. It primarily focuses on Velma Dinkley as she tries to solve a mystery regarding the disappearance of her mother, as well as the murders of local teenage girls.

In Ruby and Spears' original series bible, Fred and Shaggy are each 17 years old, Daphne is 16, and Velma is 15. For the purposes of this series, the kids were made roughly the same age: 16-17 in season 1, and 17-18 in season 2.

Charles Grandy, Velma's showrunner, has explained that what made the original Scooby-Doo content for children was the presence of Scooby-Doo. Warner Bros. Animation also said that the show could not use the dog in this adult spinoff, which ultimately coincided with the creative team's desire to make a more mature take.

Velma Season 2 Featured Scrappy-Doo Killing Velma (& Ghost Velma Killing Scrappy) The final episode of Velma season 2 had quite an unexpected and startling moment for viewers. The show positioned Scrappy-Doo as the main villain and, in the final episode, he killed off the titular character, Velma.

This would make Fred and Daphne 10, and Shaggy 11. Scooby would be 1. According to vast amounts of promotional material, in Where Are You, Velma is 15, Fred and Daphne are 16, Shaggy is 17 and Scooby is 7.

"We were really inspired by [the animated film Spider-Man:] Into the Spider-Verse — it's animation, we can do anything. The essence of Velma is not necessarily tied to her whiteness. And I identify so much as her character, and I think so many people do, so it's like, yeah, let's make her Indian in this series."

Outside of two (offscreen) murders and a smug meta-opening scene filled with cartoon nudity, Velma doesn't utilize its R rating and the creative freedom that the adult-only certification affords the series.

Also, Shaggy aka Norville, like Velma and Daphne, is race-swapped and is now an African-American man instead of a Caucasian. Shaggy or Norville's addiction to drugs in earlier depictions of the character has also been removed and he explicitly states how he dislikes them in the first episode of the show.

A running gag in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and The New Scooby-Doo Movies is Velma's severe myopia and her ability to repeatedly lose her glasses (often the result of them falling off her face while she is being chased by a villain), saying "My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!"

Diya Dinkley is a major character in Velma. She is the mother of Velma Dinkley and is voiced by Sarayu Blue. She went missing two years prior to the events of the series, and was eventually found in "A Velma in the Woods".

After the case was solved, Fred Jones took credit in front of the press, which upset Velma, so she quit the group, as did Fred and Daphne Blake, leaving Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo alone with the Mystery Machine.

Velma has been rated TV-MA, which can happen for various reasons including graphic violence, explicit sexual activity, or indecent language.

The creator, Charlie Grandy, argued that the writers' alterations—including excising Scooby from the gang, reimagining Velma as a misanthropic South Asian teenager, and incorporating grotesque gags—felt authentic to the spirit of the original series. “We wanted to be respectful,” he explained.
